How to keep carpet looking new

Quality carpet can continue looking new with routine care that keeps it soft and beautiful.
Soft and supple under foot, carpet can be an exciting and excellent way to add design and luxury to your home, given its wide selection of colors, patterns and textures.
To keep your carpet looking new, make a smart selection when you purchase it and then follow some simple maintenance tips.
Soils and stains don't stand a chance if you research before buying and choose carpet that repels them! Stainmaster carpets use smart technology to create carpet fibers that resist liquids and actually make it more difficult for dirt to stick and penetrate fibers. These carpets also have built-in protection from static, so you'll never have to spray on a temporary static solution. You'll get all the beauty with an easy-care bonus!

Step 1: Regular care

Frequent vacuuming will help keep soil and debris from becoming embedded in carpet. Soil can pit and scratch carpet fibers, so regular vacuuming helps maintain that new look. High traffic areas should be vacuumed two to five times weekly. Light traffic areas may require twice weekly vacuuming, but don't forget to go over non-traffic areas like corners once a week to keep dust from building up.
Use a vacuum with adjustable brushes that will suit the type of carpet and the area you are cleaning. Use a crevice tool to get into corners and a beater brush attachment when working on stairs. Regular vacuuming not only picks up dust, dirt and surface fragments on your carpet but will fluff up the fibers to counteract daily wear. Choose a vacuum setting to match the height of the carpet so it will clean efficiently without damaging fibers. Let your strokes overlap so you cover the entire carpet. Use the angled nozzle attachment to clean along baseboards where dust settles. Replace the vacuum bag or empty the canister when it is 2/3 full so your machine works safely and more efficiently, and periodically check the hoses and attachments for obstructions that might impair their function. You want to get the most clean with the smallest effort!

Step 2: Goodbye snags and dents

If sprouts or tufts — those snags that show above the carpet surface — appear, don't pull them! Clip or cut them with scissors. You can remove a dent caused by furniture placement by dampening the area with a white rag, then heating the spot with a hair dryer as you "rake" the carpet with your fingers. Do not let the heat make direct contact with the carpet.

Step 3: Deal with spots and stains

Spots and stains are inevitable no matter how careful you are. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations on cleaning, and never rub your carpet surface too hard as you can damage the twist of the fibers. Good maintenance is mandatory and will keep your carpet looking as beautiful as the day that it was installed!

How to Remove Pet Odors from Carpet

We hear it very often, when people move to a different place that was previously inhabited by dogs or cats or both, the smell very often stays and becomes a huge problem for the new owners. So here is a tip how to remove the smell from the carpet:
This method is very similar to other odor removing methods, the main ingredient is BAKING SODA!!!
Sprinkle a liberal amount of baking soda over the entire carpet.
The difference is that you will have to brush the baking powder into the fibers of the carpet with a large soft-bristled scrub brush and allow it to stand for  up to 24 hours. If you would like to give your carpet a pleasant scent, stir a few drops of essential oil into the baking soda before sprinkling it on the carpet.
Vacuum the carpet thoroughly. Go slowly and change the bag if you are vacuuming a large area. Also if you would like to give your carpet a pleasant scent, stir a few drops of essential oil into the baking soda before sprinkling it on the carpet.

How to Remove Cooking Oil Stains From Upholstery

Sprinkle a thick coating of baking powder onto the stain and let it sit for 20 minutes. It will pull most of the oil out of the upholstery without any damage to the upholstery. Then use a vacuum cleaner to remove it.
Pour a few drops of liquid dish soap onto a small brush (you may use a tooth brush or any other soft brush) and scrub the dish soap into the stain. The soap will naturally break up and remove the grease or oil. Repeat until the entire stain has been removed, re-applying fresh dish soap and scrubbing more as needed.
Moisten a clean white cloth with water and blot the stained area to remove any remaining dish soap or oil, and allow the area to air dry.
If the stain is too big and doesn't go after the process described above, we recommend a professional carpet cleaning service to prevent ruining your furniture.

How to clean old champagne stain from carpet

That's right, champagne stains are those that are actually difficult to clean, especially on carpet. But here are some tips that will help you to get rid of it easy:
Combine warm water and mild liquid dish soap in a bowl. Then, dip a cloth into the solution and dab the stain. Thoroughly rinse the area with warm water to remove the residue
When you just spilled the champagne it's much easier to clean, just sponge it with carbonated soda water. Blot the area well and then use a paper towel with detergent and water to try to lift the stain.
If you've got old champagne stains, you most probably will need a professional carpet cleaner, since those stains won't go easy, it will need deep penetration and certain products that only professional carpet cleaners have.

The best vacuum cleaners for using on carpet

A vacuum cleaner is a major purchase, and like other budget-conscious consumers, you'll want to find the best one for your money.
Consumer Reports magazine put 89 vacuums to the test, tackling more than 3,000 miles of dirty carpet. From upright models to canisters, bagged to bagless, the magazine rated its top picks.
Mandy Walker, the magazine's special projects editor, appeared on "Good Morning America" today to share the magazine's findings.
She explained how Consumer Reports conducted its testing: They ran the vacuums and measured the decibels. They used them to determine how easy they were to push around, and tested how well they cleaned carpets by running them repeatedly over carpet into which dirt had been pressed.
They evaluated how the vacuums worked on pet hair and sand on a floor, and also tested how much dust and dirt was left in the air so people with allergies could be aware, she added.

Best Buys

Top Pick: Kenmore Intuition 31100, $260.

Walker said this was the best buy because it was very good on floors and carpets. An upright cleaner with a bag, the Intuition has excellent tool airflow so you'll get good performance when you use a tool to clean your drapes or upholstery.
Best Bagless Upright
Hoover WindTunnel T Series Rewind, $130
Because you will need to replace bags, this will mean an added expense, but although some bagless vacuums can be messy to clean up, this one was good, Walker said. It worked well on floor and carpets. Walker said the magazine had stopped recommending Hoover vacuums because many of its replacement parts can be expensive if a repair ever needed to be done. But the magazine recommends this model, she noted.
Dyson DC28 Animal, $600
Consumer Reports also recommends the Dyson Animal. Walker acknowledged the device was expensive but said it had an excellent repair rate and did a great job on carpets and pet hair. It also has new technology that automatically adjusts to carpet's height, she added.
Best Inexpensive Model: Dirt Devil Featherlite Bagless, $50
The Dirt Devil is only $50. It used to be $60 and the manufacturer dropped the price, Walker said. Weighing in at 13 pounds, the machine is easy to maneuver and ideal for apartment-dwellers. It's also good for people who have lots of stairs because you can carry it easily up and down the staircase. It's also good on carpets, she said. The only drawback was that the Dirt Devil was a little noisy, Walker added.
Best Canister Vacuum: Kenmore Progressive, $300
Many people find this type of vacuum easier to maneuver and easier for stairs thant an upright vacuum, Walker said. Canisters typically did well on bare floors but poorly on carpets, but this model was great on both, Walker said.
Bagless Canister: Hoover Platinum Bagless Canister, $365
The Hoover was number one in this category, Walker said. She noted that this vacuum worked well on carpets and floors and the height was adjustable.

The article was published by ABC news.

How to Clean a Beer Stain from Carpet

The first thing to do is to blot the stain with a wet washcloth. Then mix a 1/3 cup of white vinegar with a ½ cup of water. Stir it in well. Put your washcloth in the solution and let it absorb. Once your rag is wet, dab some of that solution on the stain using the cloth.
Once you have dabbed on the vinegar/water solution, allow it to sit for 10 minutes. This will allow it to soak in and remove the beer stain. After you have allowed the vinegar/water solution to sit, mix a little of the soap in with just a little water. Apply this to your rag once again and dab it on top of the vinegar/water solution. Keep dabbing it on. Do this for a couple of minutes.
Now that the solutions have sat for a couple of minutes, you can remove them by laying a cloth on top of the area and putting something heavy on of of it. This will apply a lot of pressure to the stain and help get all the solution moisture out of your carpet.
After you have dried up the stained area with your cloth, take some tap water and rinse the solution covered area. Keep doing this until the area is showing no more signs of soap. You may have to repeat it a few more times. Then place a clean dry cloth on top of it and apply some pressure ( you may use books).
After the area is dry vacuum to straighten the carpet fibers.

Reasons to have carpet professionally cleaned

1. Prolongs the life of carpeting. Regular carpet cleaning using the extraction method can increase the life of carpets significantly, protecting your floor-covering investment.

2. Protects indoor air quality. Carpets trap airborne pollutants; however, eventually those pollutants must be removed in order to protect the carpet and maintain indoor air quality.

3. Makes carpets easier to maintain. Most carpet soiling is made up of dry soils; when carpets are kept thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis, most dry soils can be removed with regular vacuuming.

4. Removes spots and stains. As with other soils, spots and stains can attract more soiling. Removing them promptly protects carpeting from damage.

5. Prevents buildup of allergens and bacteria. Moist soiling of carpets can result in the buildup of several unhealthy contaminants.

6. Enhances the appearance of any room. Clean, well-maintained carpets speak volumes about the overall cleanliness of a home or facility.

7. Improves worker morale. Workers feel better about their work environment when it is clean. This includes the carpeting.

8. Makes carpeting look and feel clean and fresh.

9. Removes dust mites and bedbugs that may have found a home in carpets.

10. Maintains the carpet’s warranty. Most carpet warranties require that carpets be cleaned using the extraction method within a specific amount of time, usually every 12 to 18 months.

Why Eco-Friendly Green Carpet Cleaning is Better for Your Home

In today's modern world there is an increasing number of people looking into the use of green carpet cleaning ideas and products, as a way to reduce the amount of chemicals being used to clean carpets. When looking at products that are purchased to remove spots from rugs and carpets these substances may contain caustic ingredients, solvents that are petroleum based and chlorine.

A more eco-friendly way to handle many spots is to use vinegar, either undiluted or diluted with water. This can be applied to the spot by the use of a spray bottle that will produce foam and then mopped up with paper towel or clean cloth. Vinegar is a natural product that doesn't contain the artificial ingredients of other products and is much better for an individual's health and the environment.
Green carpet cleaning ideas for removing grease are the use of corn meal. The corn meal sprinkled onto the affected area then left for about ten minutes will help soak up the grease; it can then be rubbed with a diluted vinegar and water mix and mopped up with paper towel or a clean cloth. If you have children you may find crayon on the rug or carpet, this may be easily remove by using undiluted vinegar and a small brush.

Sodium bi-carbonate is another useful cleaning product. These are other eco-friendly ideas that do not use a chemical based spot spray solution which may leave a residue behind causing headaches or other reactive problems.
These products are also useful for some food spills such as tea, coffee, chocolate, ketchup and cola. If these spills are treated quickly, clean water can be used to clean them up. Many other green carpet cleaning products that can be purchased use natural enzymes, products made from vegetable and fruit extracts, cider vinegar and other items. These are non toxic, are all bio-degradable and do not leave residues or other allergies causing problems in the rugs and carpets when the work is finished. Businesses are also available who do commercial cleaning of larger areas of carpet with these types products as well.

How to Remove Ink Stains from Carpet

Grab a clean cloth and start gently dabbing the stain right after you spilled the ink, do not rub it, it will spread all over and your stain will be even bigger. After the excess ink is gone and you've got only the stain, wet a clean cloth with a rubbing alcohol and blot the stain. Dab the wet cloth over the ink spot repeatedly, occasionally re-wetting the cloth with more alcohol.
After the stain is gone, you will need to clean the spot where the alcohol was used since it might damage the carpet fibers if it stays there for  too long.
Mix a 1/4 cup of vinegar with a quart of warm water and rinse the area.
If after all the efforts the stain is still visible, then use our O.I.N.K. product, the stain will be gone in no time!!!

How to Remove Rust Stains From Carpet

First you will need to scrape all the rust left from the carpet, if there is any. Then pour plain white vinegar or if you don't like vinegar smell try lemon juice mixed with salt onto the stained area. Let it soak in for a few hours, then blot with a damp towel. After pour a tiny amount of dish soap onto a damp sponge, then gently blot it into the stained area of the carpet and let it sit for 15 minutes. Blot the area with a clean white towel soaked in water. If the rust stain appears to be coming off onto the towel, keep blotting, and repeat the detergent application as needed.
If after all the stain is still visible ( because it also depends on the type of carpet and its fibers), then try our T-RUST. This Environmentally Sound Rust Remover will remove rust in no time.

How To Remove Cool Aid Stain From Carpet

Mix a few drops of dish detergent with warm water. Then use a clean white towel, soak it with the solution and then squeeze it out. Place the towel on top of the stain.
After place an iron on top of the cloth over the stain. Set the iron to the lowest setting. Allow the iron to sit on the cloth for 15 minutes, not more than that and do not press the iron into the stain. It will ruin the carpet fibers if you use force.
When you remove the iron from the stain, you will see that the towel will be red and the stain gone. If the stain is still there, fold the towel and place the clean side on the stain again and repeat the procedure.
If you would like stain to be gone in seconds without a hassle, then use our Red Zone Ready!

 Good luck :)

How to extend carpet's life

These professional carpet cleaning tips will help you maintain the quality and appearance of your carpet and hopefully preventing unnecessary staining and wear.

    1. Vacuum on a regular basis to prevent everyday dirt from setting into your carpet.
    2. Consider using area rugs in high traffic areas. That will protect your carpet from unnecessary staining and wear.
    3. If you have dogs who spend a lot of time outside, keep doggie towels near the doors you let them in and out by. Use them to wipe their paws to prevent tacked in dirt and stains.
    4. Use spot cleaning solutions between cleanings to treat any spills or spots you encounter.
    5. Have your carpets professionally cleaned every six to nine months, depending on how heavily they are soiled.
    6. Apply protectant to your carpet to help prevent stains from forming.
    7. If you do spill, blot, blot, blot! Get up as much of the liquid in the carpet as possible to prevent it from sinking into the carpet pad.
    8. Don’t pour water on to stains in order to “lighten them.” Although this can loosen the stain, it will subsequently sink deeper into the carpet and the pad, making it worse in the long run.

How to Clean Pet Urine Stains on Carpet

Your dog’s urine is a combination of ammonia, bacteria, hormones, nitrogen and uric acid. It’s the uric acid that creates a lingering smell even after you’ve cleaned up after your dog. It can be especially potent when the air is humid.
Since the canine sense of smell is hundreds of times more powerful than ours, it’s important to remove all traces of urine odor. If you don’t, your dog is very likely return to the same spot to do it all over again – especially if he’s not thoroughly housebroken or is left too long between trips outdoors to eliminate.
Take the following steps to thoroughly clean urine stains and odor from carpets and rugs:
  1. Using paper towels or other absorbent material like a rag or cloth, blot up as much of the urine as possible.
  2. Pour plain water over the spot and soak up the moisture again using clean paper towels – continue blotting until you don’t see any more yellow on the towels.
  3. Mix a solution of fifty percent white vinegar and fifty percent water. You must use a liberal amount of this solution to reach the carpet fibers deep down. Work the solution into the carpet with a soft brush or your fingers to ensure it penetrates the carpet fibers below.
  4. Then blot the area using the paper towel method above to absorb the vinegar mixture. The vinegar will neutralize the ammonia in the dog urine. If you own a wet/dry vacuum extractor use it to remove excess moisture.
  5. When the area has dried or almost dried sprinkle a good handful of baking soda over the soiled area.
Mix half a cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of Dish Soap detergent.
  6. Slowly pour the 3% hydrogen peroxide and dishwashing detergent mixture over the baking soda. You can also use a spray bottle for the hydrogen peroxide/dish washing detergent solution.                                                                                                                   Caution: Do not use Hydrogen Peroxide that is higher than 3% strength (10 Vol)
  7. Allow the area to dry completely. Once the area is thoroughly dry, vacuum up the baking soda. A fan or heater can assist drying. Use a hard bristled brush to loosen up the baking soda if necessary.

How To Remove Grease Stains On Carpet

Removing any type of stain doesn’t always call for expensive and popular stain removers. Most of the time these stain removers are ineffective, therefore you are not getting your money’s worth. You can always find the perfect mix by looking underneath your sink, in your laundry room, or just in your kitchen cupboards. Mixing up a cleaning solution of your own is inexpensive and less harsh on your items at home.

First Method:
Scrape off excess grease, then sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch on the stain. Let stand for 10 to 15 minutes, and then vacuum.
Using a clean cloth, sponge the stain with a dry-cleaning solvent. Blot until the solvent is absorbed. If the stain is not gone, mix one tablespoon of liquid hand dishwashing detergent and one tablespoon of white vinegar with two cups of warm water. Sponge the stain with this solution. Blot until the liquid is absorbed. Sponge with cold water and blot dry to remove the detergent/vinegar solution.
Second Method:
First Scrape off excess grease. Then make this solution: mix 1 tablespoon of ammonia with ¼ teaspoon dish soap and 1 quart of water in a spray bottle. This mixture will help to dissolve most of the grease. Spray the mixture lightly onto the grease stain. Lightly moisten the stain, don't soak it. Blot the stain with rag or paper towel to remove moisture and help work the cleaning solution into the carpet. You may see the stain begin to disappear at this point.
Keep spraying and blotting the stain until it's gone. Rinse with a spray bottle of clean water, making sure not to soak the area.
